I installed a Tempra 36 in a new application (not a replacement). It does everything it says it does and without taking up a huge space. It was easy to install and easy to use. The best part of this product is the endless hot water at a preset temperature.

You MUST review the flow rates and temperature rise charts to be sure it is adequate for your application. If you have colder water or want more water for your shower, the unit may only be able to keep up with one, not two or more people taking a shower at the same time. There are no electric units on the market that are as powerful as the propane ones, so make sure you've done your homework before installing.

The unit WILL draw its rated power (36kw) if you ask it to, so make sure you have enough power. It takes THREE 60 amp breaker PAIRS, which is a LOT of panel space. Check this also before installing... Read more

Our old hot water heater corroded and sprung a leak, so we had to buy something to replace it. The Tempra 36 we bought is working wonderfully. It took some time (electric company was slow) to upgrade the electrical panel to support the Tempra 36, but we are adding on to our home in the next couple of years anyway. We were going to have to upgrade the electrical panel to add on to our home. We can run both of our showers at the same time along with a sink and still get hot water as hot as we can stand it. We love the dial on the front of the unit that allows us to adjust the temperature in seconds. It takes up NO SPACE to speak of, and we were able to mount it to the wall and hook the plumbing up easily ourselves. We let the electrician hook up the power to the unit. We now store tools in the space where the hot water heater was.

We expect to save about $25 a month over the old 50 gal tank we had...we shall see!!

In remodeling my kitchen I found I needed to move my refrigerator to where my 50 gallon water heater sat, so I decided to go tankless.

I bought the Stiebel Eltron Tempra 36 from AMAZON (Compact Appliance) for a little over $700.00 (Great Price!), upgraded my home to 400 AMP service, mounted the Tempra 36 to a wall in my washroom, removed my existing water heater, plumbed all hot & cold water lines to/from the Tempra 36, ran three 35 foot lengths of 6 gauge wire (X2 hot + ground) from the Tempra 36 to my new breaker panel and connected with three 60 AMP two pole breakers.

I fired the beast up after ensuring I had no leaks and lo and behold, NEARLY SCALDING HOT WATER!! ONLY WHEN I WANT IT!!

I am a 100% do-it-your-selfer and believe me, this tankless water heater was simple to install and connect.

IT SHOULD PAY FOR ITSELF WITHIN ONE YEAR'S TIME!! I HIGHLY RECCOMEND IT!!

The Tempra 24 Plus kicks out precise temperature hot water instantly and maintains a steady tempreature. Seems like very high quality and with the digital temperature readout very easy to use and know what the unit is doing.
While the plumbing installation is simple and the unit does not require any venting, the electrical service installation is very heavy duty. If you have an old house it is very likely that your electrical panel won't handle the two 60-amp curcuits required here. A new panel can cost a couple thousand dollars. Check it out first before buying one of these.
My newer house had enough capacity for the installation and it still cost almost $500, and that was a good price for time and materials with the electrician only.
Even with the professional electrical work, I can still detect a slight bump, or flicker in the lights when you turn on the hot water. Not really a dimming, just a little flicker. Barely perceptable but it's there. It's a very small... Read more

Install was fairly straight forward. Had to have two seperate 60 amp circuit breakers installed with 6 gage wire. Plumbing was easy just make sure you purchase the steel braid hoses as prescribed, black rayon braid will not install!! (I learned the hard way) Set the temp to 109 per recommendation and tested the water. After 10-15 seconds, the water began to get warm but never went above luke warm. No way I could take a shower in that cool of water. I tried multiple settings with the same result. I called the company that sent it to me and talked to a rude person on the phone telling me they were not actually responsible for that product and I'm thinking here comes the run around. After offering me voice mail or hold I choose hold and waited about 8 minutes. The young lady that came on was surprisingly very helpful and ended up directing me to Steibel Eltron technical support. Since it was Friday, about 5:15 PM, I held out little hope of getting anyone but she checked their hours and... Read more

Be aware before you buy that you don't just need to ensure that your household electrical system will handle the load (minimum 200 Amp etc etc). I am very disappointed that I will have to return this and go with a standard tank heater due to the inadequacy of my utility company's system (Idaho Power). My electrician was unaware this would be a problem - I consulted with him before buying - but we subsequently learned that the transformer serving my house (and several neighbors) cannot begin to handle the load from a tankless water heater, and I would have to pay Idaho Power to upgrade their service. I was hoping to do the right energy-saving thing, but now will have to continue with a less efficient tank heater after all. The additional cost is just too much for us right now.

For those who don't know, Stiebel Eltron make the best electric tankless heaters on the market. They have the digital thermostat, and it will keep your water to the exact temperature you set regardless of demand. I set mine to 106'F and it is exactly 106'F, regardless of if I have just 1 tap open or 5 plus a shower, dishwasher, etc...

As for installation it was fairly basic. Just an in and out for the plumbing and the electrical was fairly straightforward. You need 3 x 60A 208-204V lines plus a ground. That means 6 spaces in your breaker panel. This is the biggest electric tankless that can go on a 200A service. Anything larger and you need a 400A service. I am a licensed electrician so instalation was simple for me. Otherwise I would definitely hire an electrician to do the hookup. It can be intimidating to do the electical yourself with all the options. Do you use flex, tech cable, just plain old lumex, etc... I piped mine in using EMT and #6 wire,... Read more

I am very happy with this purchase. Mounting the Tempra 29 Plus and the required new electrical box in the closet was as easy as 8 screws. Wiring it all up was a little more work. The plumbing is simple if you put it where your tank was. And losing our old 50 gallon tank gave us some new closet room for the house! The product itself is absolutely fabulous and is only about 4-5 inches deep and maybe 15"x15"ish. It looks very well made. (Those Germans always make good stuff!) Once installed, your water will easily get hotter than you can stand and I felt no fluctuation in the shower when the washing machine and a sink were also running hot. The ONLY negatives I see are 1)the dedicated line requirements and 2)a couple of our fluorescent fixtures flicker/strobe slightly when hot water is running. I feel like that might simply be due to cheap bulbs or something because the "flicker" is isolated to just two fixtures in the whole house. Bottom line: Buy it. Just be prepared for a little... After deciding to go tankless, did not want to mess around so after some research decided to go with this brand and capacity. From what I could gather, Steibel Eltron is top of the line in terms of quality and technology and the 29 was more than enough power for my 2.5 baths. The big learning after I ordered the unit was that the electrical requirements are pretty significant. You can't just plug this thing in. If you have an existing breaker panel with plenty of empty spaces you should be okay, although you may still need an electrician to run some thick cables through your walls to get closer to the unit. I had to have a new panel put in (near the unit, connected to existing panel through the walls/ceiling). A fair amount of work for an electrician and then to patch up the walls. Total cost for that was around $1,500. Separately, had a plumber install the unit and get rid of the old tank heater as well as the vents and gas piping that fed it for about $500. So all in, cost...
